Jaana Viljaranta

I am working as a post doctoral researcher at the Department of Psychology, University of Jyväskylä, Finland. From 1st July to 31 August 2013, I was based at Institute of Behavioural Sciences at the University of Helsinki. I completed my PhD in December 2010 at the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Learning and Motivation Research, University of Jyväskylä. My dissertation examined students’ learning motivation, especially the role of interest and task values in relation to academic skill development and educational plans. I became a PATHWAYS Fellow in October 2012.

My research focuses on the development of learning motivation, as well as on the role that teachers and parents play with regard to students’ motivation. My special interests are the developmental changes in student motivation, as well as the role of learning motivation in relation to adolescents’ educational and occupational plans and decisions. I’m also interested in deploying a person-oriented approach to examine these topics.
